Job Description  

Shrewsbury Town is an established League One team who have played at the level for 10 consecutive years. Shrewsbury Town Football Club is a family-centered club that believes in being proactive, innovative and thorough in their delivery across all aspects of the football club. 

Formed in 1886, Shrewsbury Town FC has spent much of its time playing in the Football League and is proud to be recognised as one of the stalwarts of the league system. 

Job Purpose

We are seeking an exceptional individual to contribute to the physical preparation of the players to ensure the readiness and performance of the players is always at a maximum. As such, Shrewsbury Town FC are looking to recruit a passionate and knowledgeable physical performance coach who can optimise the physical development of the football club.   

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in planning, delivering, and optimising the fitness development of players, as well as supporting the medical performance department to deliver an elite physical offering that covers all aspects of the performance paradigm.

The successful candidate will be based at our first-team training facility in Shrewsbury and will be expected to be present at all first-team training and games.

Key Responsibilities  

  • Assist in planning and delivery of the physical conditioning of the first team squad. 
  • Perform, review and record daily readiness to train provisions alongside medical staff.
  • Collect and collate GPS player training and matchday workload reports as well as return-to-play data.
  • Assist in the implementation of individual player-specific conditioning programmes.
  • Assist in the formulation and delivery of injury prevention programmes.
  • Plan and disseminate the physical performance programme for younger age groups, including collecting growth and maturation data for future profiling. 
  • Lead on matchday protocols including physical preparation, nutrition, hydration and post-match conditioning where required.
  • Plan, assist and deliver fitness testing protocols in conjunction with the medical performance department.
  • Contribute to the implementation and delivery of field-based and anthropometric testing protocols and analyse the data and provide feedback to the multidisciplinary team members and individual players as indicated.
  • Provide regular oral and written reports at appropriate meetings with regard to the performance plan and results of previous performances.
  • To oversee field and gym-based sessions along with supporting the other medical performance staff.
  • Initiate and contribute to special projects that are part of the wider development of the medical performance department at the football club
  • To complete multi-disciplinary reviews for each player, providing short-term, medium-term and long-term action points throughout the season when necessary.
  • Monitor the internal and external training loads of the first team squad and advise on the current status of the squad to the rest of the medical performance team. 
  • Liaise with those throughout the breadth of the club with regard to training loads and expectations of a club-wide approach.
  • To deliver additional services within the medical performance department as your qualifications allow.

This role may involve working with children and/or adults at risk in regulated activity (or in close proximity to children and/or adults at risk). This means that the post-holder is required to apply all relevant policies and uphold the club’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable people

Person Specification 

Essential –  

  • A motivated and proactive individual who is capable of overseeing a number of concurrent activities.
  • Operate within the rules of professional confidentiality to liaise with athletes, medical staff, sports sciences staff, coaches and other support staff as appropriate.
  • An understanding of individual responsibility in complying with health and safety policies

Technical/work-based skills: skills specific to the job e.g. language competence, typing skills, coaching skills etc 

Essential –  

  • Minimum of one year working as a sports scientist/conditioner within an elite sporting environment.
  • Experience delivering warm-up, cool-down, flexibility, core strength and stability, speed, agility and quickness training.
  • Experience in how to modify and develop conditioning programmes according to test results or specific individual needs.
  • Evidence of a proven track record in designing multi-faceted periodised training programmes specific to elite football.
  • Ability to modify coaching style when delivering practical sessions to different populations.
  • Experience coaching Olympic weightlifting to a high professional standard.
  • A strong grasp of GPS load monitoring and conditioning principles. 
  • Crossover qualifications to assist in other areas of the medical performance department as the need dictates.
  • Experience in actively engaging with players and technical coaches to create a culture that enhances attitudes towards physical development.
  • Excellent anatomical knowledge and an ability to apply this specifically when communicating with coaches and physiotherapists.
  • Ability to communicate complex data in terms easily understood by a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to work irregular and unsociable hours as required involving work outside normal office hours, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

Experience: proven record of experience in a particular field, profession or specialism.

Essential:  

  • An undergraduate degree in a sports science related field (2:1 minimum)
  • Crossover qualifications to assist in other areas of the medical performance department as the need dictates. 

Desirable:  

  • EFAIF medical certificate
  • NSCA Accreditation 
  • Working towards or holding UKSCA Accreditation
  • ISAK level 1
