Whalley wants to get the job done
Town Winger Shaun Whalley is hoping Town can get the job done on Saturday when they face Southend at the Greenhous Meadow.Town’s draw against Northampton on Monday means they sit three points clear of the drop zone, whilst Southend are currently 7th, just a point outside the play-offs.
Shaun was one of the standout performers against Northampton on Monday and he has been pleased with his form this season.
“The lad could have had about six yellow cards before he got two and got sent off”, Shaun laughed.
“I thought it was a good team performance on Monday. I thought we passed it a lot better that the last few games especially and it was a positive performance and we got a point out of it, which with everyone else getting beat was a point gained.
“I feel like I’ve played well all season to be honest. Obviously there have been a couple of games where I haven’t been at my best level, but different games bring out different things in you and I feel like I’ve done well.
“We’ve just all got to be in good form and try and get us over the line now and that’s the most important thing.”
A win on Saturday could see Town to safety in League One, but Shaun will be treating it the same way no matter who the opposition is.
“It’s just another game”, admitted Whalley.
“We go into it looking for the three points and a good performance and then later on we will check the other results and see where it’s left us in the league.
“It will be a difficult test, but every game in the league is a difficult test. I’ve said before that Coventry at home was hard, Chesterfield away was hard and those two are going down.
“I don’t know much about Southend, but I’m sure we will go over things today, find out what their weaknesses are and then look towards Saturday and putting in a good performance.”
Town’s home form has been good since Paul arrived at the club and Whalley would like to give the fans something to cheer about in the final home game of the season.
“I think it’s an advantage to be at home because our home form has been really good”, said Shaun.
“I think we’ve done well away as well, but we’ve obviously picked up more wins at home, so it can be a positive, but we still have to work hard and try and get the three points on Saturday.
“I remember last year when we played Peterborough and it was a really strange game. We had to go in at the end of the game and they were still playing elsewhere because it had kicked off 15 minutes later.
“We ended up staying up, but all the crowd had all gone home and we’d got beat, so it was a strange feeling. But, hopefully this time we can do the business on Saturday.”
