Matt Bullin takes a look back at our recent record with Gillingham
Town travel to the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday to take on Gillingham, and they go into the match holding a slight historical edge.Town have won 23 of the 60 league and cup matches between the sides, while Gillingham have won 19 of the matches, and there have been 18 draws. Town have scored 90 goals in the 60 match ups, to Gillingham’s 79.
The most recent fixture between the sides came in August of this season as Gillingham’s extra time winner ensured they took all three points away from the Greenhous Meadow.
Town raced into a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes thanks to a Louis Dodds brace. Though a second half brace from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and a 93rd minute strike from Max Ehmer ensured Gillingham took the win.
In the 2015/16 season the sides met twice in League One, in the second of the ties Town won an invaluable three points with a 3-2 win at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
In a topsy-turvy game which saw Sully Kaikai open the scoring for Town before Cody McDonald equalised on the stroke of half time.
Town then retook the lead after 56 minutes through Andy Mangan, only for Jake Hessenthaler to pull one back for the Gills, before Jean Akpa Akpro eventually won it for Town in the 83rd minute.
Earlier in that season, in November 2015, the sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Greenhous Meadow.
An Adedeji Oshilaja own goal handed Town the lead before goals either side of half time from Cody McDonald and Ryan Jackson made it 2-1 to Gillingham. But a James Collins goal for Town ensured the points were shared.
Town again had the better of it in the 2013/14 season, though in May 2014 they had to settle for a 1-1 away draw.
Adam Barrett scored first for Gillingham, before Shaun Miller levelled for Town four minutes before the end.
Earlier in that season, in October 2013, Town sealed a 2-0 home win in the league.
A first half goal from Joe Jacobson and a late strike from Liam McAlinden gave Town the win, in a season which eventually saw Town relegated from League One.
