Club looking to start association for ex Town players

Shrewsbury Town are looking to create a former players association to keep in touch with all the players who have had the honour to wear the blue and amber shirt.

Former players have always been welcomed back at the club on matchdays with many over the season coming along to games.

The idea is to have a more formal association where several players will be invited along to the home games and be part of the FanZone, Sovereign Club and half-time activities.  With an association in place it should be possible to welcome as many players over the season as we can.

Talks have been going on behind the scenes for a while and CEO Brian Caldwell is hoping the idea can get off the ground.

“The media department and myself have been talking about how we can make this better with the commercial guys”, Brian said.

“I think it’s important now that we’ve had the FanZone in operation for a few games, we’ve obviously got our own sponsors lounge and we’ve got the sovereign club members, that there is an opportunity there for former players to come along.

“A lot of them love coming back to the stadium and coming to the games and it’s about making that into a formal organisation so that we have certain players coming to every single game.

“Ken Mulhearn’s here every single week and the plan is for him to host and with a couple of other ex-players do things around the matchday.

“I think the fans always like to see former players, have a chat and speak again about the past times, so hopefully that’s something we can get up and running and move forward because it’s good for everybody.”
