Young exciting winger joins Town
James Caton is the latest new face to join up with the Micky Mellon revolution at the Greenhous Meadow.
The Widnes born 20 year old started his career with Bolton Wanderers before making the short move to join Blackpool on a two year deal. His opportunities in the Tangerines first team were limited to two appearance but he also spent time out on loan with Accrington Stanley and Chester City.
James is another young player with a lot of potential and this is something that Micky Mellon has identified. The two have spoken a number of times and in the end James has agreed to join Town on a two year deal.
The paperwork was finally completed this afternoon with James becoming latest player to join the Shrewsbury Town fight back:”I was made aware of the interest from Shrewsbury by Matt Williams and when I came down and saw the club and spoke to Micky it didn't take long to make my mind up.
“I got a feel off the manager that he's really buzzing about me, because he believed in me it made me want to join the club.
“There is a good feel about Shrewsbury and the club is looking to do things the right way.”
The Town fans have a history of warming to young wingers with the likes of Jon Taylor and Marc Pugh all exciting the Greenhous Meadow faithful. James has played as a winger for most of his career and is hoping his play will excite the Town fans:”The fans can expect a bit of entertaining football, I'm a player that likes to get the ball and run at players to create chances.
“If they are looking for a bit of entertainment then they are looking at the right player.
“I can play on both sides but I'm not just going to say I'm a winger, I can play the Number 10 role but it's about where the manager sees me having a role in the team.
“Whether that's on the left wing, the right wing or in the hole then hopefully I'll get the chance.”
It was a frustrating two years for James at Blackpool with first team chances limited. He did though spend spells on loan with Accrington Stanley and Chester City to gain some League 2 experience:”It was a new experience for me at Accrington to get some competitive football which I wasn't getting at Blackpool.
“I was playing in the same league that we are going to play in so I'll know what to expect.
“It wasn't ideal to go to Chester but I just wanted to play football which I knew I wasn't going to get at Blackpool. I was lucky enough to score on my debut for Chester and then that was that and I was back at Blackpool.”
The focus now turns to the return to the Greenhous Meadow on Friday June 27th to begin the hard work of pre-season training, something James is looking forward to:” I've had my fun in the sun and now I'm focused about the hard work and the challenge ahead.”
